Cantina Creative has long been known for their shiny FUI work, features in all sorts of Marvel-ous films.

The strict requirements of Cantina’s high-end vfx and production clients mean that deliveries need to fulfill not only creative needs but follow strict technical guidelines as well.

To help ensure these guidelines were met, Cantina commissioned a custom AE tool to act as a preflight check for artists to run prior to rendering out masters.

The tool is able to check projects for a wide variety of criteria ranging from simple overlooked settings (is the project 32bpc?) to the more arcane (are motion blur angle and phase set to the appropriate values?). Depending on the criteria, the tool could go into the project and attempt to fix specific issues as well.

Should any issues arise, the artist would be prompted with an easily-navigable “Errors” interface that details all of the potential concerns, and allows the user to easily find and correct the problems before triggering a render.

One additional feature we added was an “Overbright/Negative Detector,” which used a novel effects stack on a guide layer in order to highlight overbright (or negative) pixels in your comp with zebrastriping, a la Nuke. This allowed the artist to ensure all values were in-range, and that there wouldn’t be any complains from the compositing or colour teams down the road.
